Step-by-Step Guide: How to Teach Your Puppy to Sit

Training a new puppy can be a fun and rewarding experience for both you and your furry friend. One of the first commands that many people teach their puppies is "sit." Here's a step-by-step guide to help you train your puppy to sit:

  1. Start by finding a quiet and distraction-free area where you can work with your puppy. This could be in a room of your house or in your back garden.

  2. Hold a smelly treat in your hand and hold it close to your puppy's nose. This will get their attention and make them want to follow the treat.

  3. Slowly move the treat over your puppy's head, towards their tail. As they follow the treat, their hind end will naturally lower to the ground.

  4. As soon as their bottom hits the ground, give the command "sit" in a clear and calm voice.

  5. Praise your puppy calmly and give them the treat as a reward for following the command.

  6. Be carful not to over use the command when first training "sit" this will only confuse your puppy. Give the command "sit" then pause rather than "sit sit sit"

  7. Repeat this process several times a day, every day. This will help your puppy to associate the command "sit" with the action of sitting down.

  8. Gradually, start to give the "sit" command without showing the treat. Reward your puppy with praise or a treat when they follow the command.

  9. Consistency is key, so be sure to practice this command regularly throughout the day.

With patience and consistency, your puppy will soon learn to sit on command. Remember to always use positive reinforcement and be patient with your pup as they learn.

Happy training!
